The gasoline assist was a late addition to the Volt program and means most of its battery, generator and inverter hardware and software is larger and heavier than it needs to be. Adding in gasoline power for high-demand scenarios defeats some of the engineering merit of the system, but it causes a bigger problem in total weight and interior packaging problems, as discussed above.
